چکیده

Candidate Ballot Information and Election Outcomes: The Czech Case We measure the importance of candidate characteristics listed on ballots for a candidate’s position on a slate, for preferential votes received by a candidate, and, ultimately, for getting elected. We focus on the effects of gender, various types of academic titles, and also several novel properties of candidates’ names. Using data on over 200 thousand candidates competing in recent Czech municipal board and regional legislature elections, and conditioning on slate fixed effects, we find ballot cues to play a stronger role in small municipalities than in large cities and regions, despite the general agreement on higher candidate salience in small municipalities. We also quantify the election advantage of a slate being randomly listed first on a ballot. JEL Classification: D72, D83

The impact of candidate name order on election outcomes in North Dakota

A number of studies have explored the possibility that the ordering of candidates’ names on the ballot might influence how those candidates perform on election day. Strong evidence of an order effect comes from investigations of election returns in states that implemented quasi-random assignment of candidate name orders to voters. Although most such studies have identified benefits for earlier-...

BRAVO: Ballot-polling Risk-limiting Audits to Verify Outcomes

Risk-limiting post-election audits guarantee a high probability of correcting incorrect electoral outcomes, regardless of why the outcomes are incorrect. Two types of risk-limiting post-election vote tabulation audits are comparison audits and ballot-polling audits. Secrecy and independence for election schemes

We study ballot secrecy and ballot independence for election schemes. First, we propose a definition of ballot secrecy as an indistinguishability game in the computational model of cryptography. Our definition builds upon and strengthens earlier definitions to ensure that ballot secrecy is preserved in the presence of an adversary that controls the bulletin board and communication channel. Seco...

How long is a piece of string? An exploration of multi-winner approval voting and ballot-length restrictions

Despite this common feature, there does not seem to be any theoretical justification fo...

You may vote for all the candidates if you approve of them all; such a ballot will not help select a winner, but it will show that you voted and that you approved of the winner. The candidate with the largest number of vo...
